Catriona Leven has been working on her MSc thesis on the Columbia Wetlands. She is studying the water levels of the wetlands, describing their ecology and the waterbirds that use the different types of wetlands. She describes how we can maintain wetlands in the face of climate change by building beaver dams and how those beaver dams will enhance water birds and species at risk. Catriona is also working full time for the Columbia Wetlands Stewardship Partners for the Kootenay Conservation Program’s Kootenay Connect project and the Columbia Basin Trusts Ecosystem Enhancement Program.
Dr. Suzanne Bayley, President of Columbia Wetlands Stewardship Partners. Suzanne has studied the ecology of wetlands and shallow lakes in BC, Alberta, and Ontario as well as in the eastern USA. She was a professor of ecology at the University of Alberta, and previously at the University of Florida. She lives in Brisco BC, overlooking the magnificent Columbia Wetlands. She can watch the elk grazing below her house and study the ecology when the floodwaters arrive in the spring. She will present some of her research and restoration from various projects.
